Downgrading Snom phones firmware version from 7 to 6

Since the new batch of Snom phones  come with version 7 and the downgrade process is not  as straight forward as we are used to, we’ve put together the following instructions for downgrading version 7 to version 6 for those customer that still want to use version 6. Please note this does not apply to the 370s.

**********

IMPORTANT NOTE (10/31/2007):

SNOM has released a script that would do all automatically thru the web gui. If you want to do it the easy way, stop here and follow instructions in this other blog entry: Automatic Snom phones downgrade from Version 7 to Version 6

*********

Important notes about the process:

-  The process involves loading and intermediate version and the use of a tftp server. If the process is not completed the phone might turn unusable.
-  You can only downgrade to one of the following versions: 6.2.21, 6.2.17 or 6.2.12
-  The phone needs to have version 7.1.6 or 7.1.8 to be able to downgrade. If the current version is higher than 7.1.8, downgrade your phone to version 7.1.8 or 7.1.6.   using the normal procedure thru the phone’s GUI.

Preparation

1.  Getting the TFTP server ready

You will need a tftp server and network connectivity between the phone and the computer running the tftp server or a cross over cable.
TFTP stands for trivial file transfer program. It is a simple way to transfer files without authentication. The most widely used free tftp server is pumpkin. Click here to download the program.
Once the program is downloaded, click on the pumpkin icon in the directory that was downloaded to. Once installed then go to start, programs, klever and run the program.

Click on options to make sure it is set up properly. It is recommended to create a tftp directory off of the C: drive to store the tftp files. It can be put any where as long as it is referenced here. Make sure the following default settings are set. Give all files must be checked.
By default tftp uses port 69 so make sure no other tftp servers are running. Also make sure your PC does not have a Firewall/antivirus that might block that program.

2.  Getting the files ready

Click in the link below that correspond to the phone model and desired version

Once you click on the link it will ask to save it to the hard drive. Put it in the tftp directory for simplicity. Once the file is downloaded rename the file to snom300.bin , snom320.bin or snom360.bin depending upon the phone model that you are downgrading.

3.  Finding out the IP addresses

CMD Snom IP phonesIn your PC open a command line window ( Go to Start Run   and type cmd) and type ipconfig. Look for the Ethernet adapter IP address ( 192.168.0.5 ) in this case. That is the IP of the tftp server ( your PC). Pick a different IP to be configured during the process  in the phone by changing the last digit and making sure no other device has it by pinging that IP as shown below.   Take note of the IP address of the server   ( 192.168.0.5 in this case), the IP to be assigned to the phone, subnet mask and gateway ( 192.168.0.148 , 255.255.255.0 , 192.168.0.1 in this case).

You are ready for the process.

Downgrade process:

1.  Open the phone’s GUI, Copy the link below into Firmware   text field on the Software Update page and click on Load.

Your phone will download the file and reboot (make sure it shows successful load).

reaches 1.

3. Enter all the addresses requested on the display. Phone newly assigned IP address, mask, Gw and tftp server address. Use the next button and only press the check button once all addresses are entered.
